PSI Waste's Versa-Pak is the most versatile, yet simple, compactor power unit around.  It boasts a long list of features and few wires, connections and other devices.  No only that, when something does go wrong there are many indicator lights and auxilliary control buttons to help you diagnose and repair the problem.  Here's the downloadable manual to show you all of the great features of Versa-Pak.  Buy one now and start enjoying the the benefits.

Power Unit Wiring and Protection
Why is it important?  Improper wiring or branch circuit protection (breakers, disconnects)may present a firehazard or cause equipment damage or poor perfomance.  Wire that is too small can lead to poor motor power due to a voltage drop or may even overheat during use causing a fire.  It's relatively simple to determine the correct wire size and branch circuit protection.  The OEM of the compactor should provide this information.  PSI Waste offers a generic guide to wire sizes and branch circuit protection to help competent users determine their needs should the OEM not be available or is unknown.  Please use this guide in conjunction with common sense and the advice of a licensed electrician.  For more infomation on electricity click here or go to our Links page for a list of sources.

Compactor Motor Wiring
Wiring compactor motors requires the proper motor wiring diagram.  To change motor rotation on a single-phase motor you must follow the motor wiring diagram.  On three phase motors, you must switch the positions of two legs of incoming power.  Always be sure to check power with a dependable meter before wiring a power unit.  Don't trust decals or information from others.  To check power, use a volt meter and check power from leg to leg.  Checking power from leg to ground will give you a different reading and may confuse a lesser qualified technician.

Overloads Are Important

Overloads not only protect the motor, they also protect the wires in the circuit.  Oversized or bypassed overload devices could lead to motor damage and/ or a fire.  The breakers and fuses in the circuit generally only protect against short circuits or grounded circuits.  They are not intended to protect the wires from an overload situation.
When changing the power (208,230,460volt), you must change the overloads to properly protect the motor and circuit. The OEM of the equipment should provide heater sizing.  If the OEM is not available or is unknown, PSI Waste offers a generic heater sizing guide for competent users.  For overload settings, check the motors full load amp rating on the motor nameplate.  Be sure to use the amp rating for the proper voltage.  As the voltage goes up the amps go down.  For instance- a 10hp motor may have a FLA rating of 28amps at 230V and 14amps at 460V.  If you overload does not have the proper setting you can buy the proper motor starter or heater from the OEM or e-mail PSI Waste to buy the proper one.  Please use this infomation in conjunction with common sense and consult a qualified electrician for direction.
